From Puno you can visit some islands, such as the Uros Island, also called the Uros Floating Islands, and they are one of the most popular islands on Lake Titicaca. These islands are the only ones of their kind in the country and are made up of reeds that serve as a base to float like boats on the surface of the ancient Puno lake. Those islands are populated by a group of indigenous people, who have a fairly ancient history. It is said that initially they belonged to the Uros group, from where the island took its name. Those first Uros would have come to Lake Titicaca, abandoning their constructions in Lake Uro-Uro in Bolivia, seeing that it was rich in the presence of totora, a material that served them for the construction of their home islands. It is said that the Uros population is one of the oldest in America, and there are even studies that dare to place this ethnic group as the oldest on this side of the world. When the Uros came to Peruvian territory, little by little they adopted the customs of the Aymara, so that today, the inhabitants of the island present many of the characteristics of this native culture.
Also the Island of Taquile is one of the many islands that make up the Titicaca circuit. It has a total area of 11 square kilometers. Taquile Island is home to a population of just over two thousand people, descendants of an ancestral community that, still today, preserves many of its ancient customs. The town of Taquile is an essentially agricultural community that takes advantage of the benign climate of the territory and the water resources of Titicaca to improve its production. The main attraction of the island is concentrated in experiential tourism, from contact with the customs and tasks of the people who live there. Living with the people of Taquile, will allow the traveler to know the different rites and beliefs that its people have.
One of the main places in Taquile where payments to the Earth are made is Mulsina, to which everyone who passes through Taquile has to go, to pay tribute to the sacred Pachamama. On Taquile Island there is also a Plaza de Armas, around which artisans gather to offer visitors the different jobs they do.
