It is the historical capital of Peru and capital of the homonymous region. It is located in the southern highlands of the country, in the Huatanay River basin, and has an approximate population of 300.000 inhabitants. Cusco is the largest tourist destination in Peru and has an influx of visitors of more than one million people a year. It was the capital of the Inca Empire and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its very important colonial cultural heritage consists of the Convent and Church of La Merced; that due to the earthquakes in this city, the Convent and Church of La Merced have been rebuilt more than once. It originally dates from the XNUMXth century. Also, it is worth highlighting the Cathedral of Cusco. This cathedral, with a Renaissance façade and Baroque and Plateresque interiors, has one of the most outstanding examples of colonial goldwork. Also important are its carved wooden altars. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Cusco.
